Maria; Or The Wrongs of Woman Mary Wollstonecraft 9781495322877 Books
A shame that Wollstonecraft did not finish her second novel before her untimely death. A reader would like to know what fate she truly had in mind for her protagonist. One only hopes that Maria does not fall into the same trap with her lover Henry Darrnford that she fell into with her husband Mr. Venables. In any event, Wollstonecraft’s creation of a connection between Maria the upper-class British lady and Jemima the lower-class working woman is quite good at demonstrating a link between women regardless of class. The novel is also adept at revealing the means by which women themselves engage in romantic notions taken from contemporary novels that ultimately give them entirely wrong impressions of the men with whom they fall in love.

Maria; Or The Wrongs of Woman Mary Wollstonecraft 9781495322877 Books Reviews
great book
A real feminist classic.
Every burgeoning feminist should read Wollstonecraft. She gives voice to her time. Also you can see her influence in her daughter's Mary Shelley's writings
A classic of feminist fiction. Interesting for its blend of optimism and despair about the goals of liberal equality. Pay attention to the way that “nature” becomes a sign of both violence and change.
Mary Wolstonecraft is the mother of Mary Shelly of Frankenstein renown. She was an author in her own right and wrote of the difficulties and limitations of women-kind of her era. She is one of the early Feminist writers and her stories attracted the shocked attention of some and the admiration of other men and women in the 18th C. She appealed to the hearts, minds and sensibilities of reasonable men and women questioning the fairness of the role women played as mere right-less property of their husbands. Even male children held more influence and authority then their mothers. Wolstonecraft was indeed ahead of her time and yet her writings are still imminently accessible to us today - facing similar questions of equality and justice in so many parts of society.
By the mother of one of the great novelists, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. Mother Mary in her only novel (so far as I know) tells a cautionary tale with a frankness that was rare in her time. This is not a novel to take to the beach, but one to savor and ponder.
A shame that Wollstonecraft did not finish her second novel before her untimely death. A reader would like to know what fate she truly had in mind for her protagonist. One only hopes that Maria does not fall into the same trap with her lover Henry Darrnford that she fell into with her husband Mr. Venables.
