I actually get excited about about a story that is historical, exciting and adventurous and keeps you guessing at what happens next. There was no sex, no foul language and the violence was an accurate depiction of a time in our history that was unfortunately gruesome at times. Though the characters were (if I am remembering correctly) fictional, the author captures the characters well, and paints such a picture with his words to make you think you had known them in real life.I loved the book and applaud it and recommend it to all who are willing to press through the archaic language of those times.

Salute to Adventurers John Buchan 9781298911506 Books Reviews
This was my first John Buchan novel, and I loved it both for its wonderful writing and its rollicking adventure aspect. It is about a rather ordinary young Scotsman who has the misfortune to be considered of the merchant class among the snobs of Tidewater Virginia where he sets up his business. When he gets wind of a terrible threat to the settlements, he lays aside his stolid Scottish inclinations and enters into a series of intrigues, wild schemes, bold and rugged toil and danger that had me laughing at times and biting my nails as I turned pages. Of course there is a beautiful, haughty girl involved; a cast of foppish rivals, and plenty of supporting roles of noble characters and lowlifes. The Scottish lad is irreppressible. I loved him. The writing was so beautiful, I highlighted portions. Will read Buchan again.
I love the way John Buchan begins many of his stories with an interesting experience that appears unrelated to the larger story, but isn't at all. He helps you really understand the "character" of the actors. This one could have easily had a sequel!
The story is wonderful, a fast-paced and emotionally moving adventure, but this paperback edition (dark red cover with white trim) seems like a somewhat unprofessional publication the type is very small, the thin spine is completely blank, the author is not listed on the cover.
What you expect of Buchan. Still a good read.
John Buchan, a Scotsman, provides us with another good read, starting in Scotland and ending up in the New America, Jamestown. An adventure yarn with Indians, pirates, good guys and bad guys, and a lovely little romance all tossed in together. For a touch of American history including some Indian tales, try this book out. And check on , there are other John Buchan works available. is a good source for historical fiction.
